Case 2 Release - 103,484 Words!
Hello, everybody! I'm very pleased to announce that "Caught in the Nightmares of those who Cannot Distinguish Reality from Fiction," the second case of One Thousand Acts of Decency, is now available to download for free! This case adds 103,484 words to OTAOD, along with several quality of life improvements. First things first- here's the cinematic trailer for Case 2, which should give an overview of what's in store for Chive, Shallot, Oscar, and the others.
Changes
There's obviously going to be one addition to the game that outshines the other, but I do want to make mention of the other, smaller tweaks I made to improve the gameplay experience of my visual novel.
- Added case 2 in its entirety, which is over 100k words
- Reworked the Transcript UI
- Fixed an issue where multiple submenus could open simultaneously
- Fixed an issue where the game over screen didn't display correctly
- Reworked some sound effects
- Patched a large sequence-breaking bug that would effect the player when interacting with RJ in specific ways
- Fixed a very obscure freeze that occurred when disabling auto-advance on certain lines
- Fixed an issue where Case 1's intro's audio was classified as a sound effect instead of music
- Added sound effects to the title screen, options menu, and case selection menu
- Added music to the title screen
- Minor text fixes for Case 1
The Second Case
Case two is now out, but I think it'd still be prudent to give a brief outline of the case, just to explain what mysteries there are to look forward to when starting Caught in the Nightmares of those who Cannot Distinguish Reality from Fiction. Case two is set in a scrapyard: Aliuros Steel Sales. This business is ran by the interim manager, Campanita Mooney, while the usual owner is in prison. Not wanting to disappoint, Campanita will do anything to keep the junkyard in working order, including hiring a local student journalist to catch the scrapyard's serial shoplifter.
That journalism student is Oscar Slotman, an outspoken proponent for justice and the best friend of Shallot Fogg. Determined to help Campanita, Oscar begins his investigation alongside Shallot and (reluctantly,) Chive. As they search, it slowly becomes apparent that these thefts defy belief- with the locked room-esque construction of the yard seeming to prevent absolutely any thefts. During the investigation, things go from bad to worse when a corpse stuffed inside a metal animatronic suit is discovered among the scrap. As Oscar frantically describes the situation to the 911 dispatcher, a Dome is dropped onto the scrapyard, sealing everyone within.
The eight hour timer begins, with the cast required to catch the killer as soon as possible. After Oscar tries and fails to open up the animatronic and reveal the victim, Chive wonders why such a strange method of hiding the body would be used. As strange as it seems, however, the truth is far more unexpected than any of them would've guessed. Also present at the scrapyard are Nargis Mooney, the security guard and Campanita's sister, Bianco Bergrey, a former child star, both of whom seem to be less-than-forthcoming with Chive.
The truth behind the unknown victim and the well-being of Aliuros Steel Sales rests in the hands of Chive O'Higgins. Will he be able to find the truth before it's buried amidst the rusting metal?
Going Forward
Going forward, my plans are to continue work on Case 3, of course! I'm extremely excited to show it off in more detail as time passes, since in terms of the overarching narrative, it's incredibly important, and I also think in terms of mystery, puzzles, and aesthetic, it has the potential to outshine both other cases. Beyond that, I also want to keep my finger on the pulse of case 2, as it were, just to make sure that I'm on the ball if some issues crops up that was missed during play testing- I fully expect to release a least a handful of patches before Case 3 comes out to clean up potential bugs, typos, etc. I also will be thinking of how I want to handle updates going forward. I do want to provide regular updates on what I've been working on, but with the linear nature of the way I work on cases, I really can't show too much of my progress after the first few updates, since my tasks would start to fall within the realm of spoilers for late in whatever case I happen to be working on. Regardless, I know I'll think of some way to formulate my debates going forward, so I'll get to share every step of OTAOD's development with anyone interested!
Anyway, I want to thank you all for reading this! I truly hope you enjoy Case 2 of One Thousand Acts of Decency!
